CHAPTER EIGHT

Nomi Orcano

This was the best part of Nomi’s day.

Okay, maybe not the best part. That was definitely later when she got to spend an hour alone with Vincent. As she thought about it, Nomi knew it sounded dirty. It wasn’t like that. Their time together was totally innocent. He brought her little pieces of electronics and gadgets from their gear. As she tinkered with them, they talked about the parts and what they were for. Then he told her what he wished they could do versus what the gear actually accomplished.

She loved their time together.

While Nomi worked, he watched her like she was a priceless piece of art. The way he stared made her feel special. It wasn’t like they spoke about the gear the entire time. She was learning so much about him. Like the fact that he was here trying to save his sister. He also talked about what he enjoyed doing while working and the work he did away from the corporations.

It felt like she could keep him talking about anything. Sometimes, she had to. The last thing she wanted was for him to start asking more questions about her. His life was so glamorous, and she spent most of hers hauling scrap and stealing food. Eventually, he would figure out the truth about her. She was a street rat, playing an engineering expert. What would happen between them then?

She was content that he was interested in her at all.

If Nomi was honest with herself, she might have harbored a small crush on the man. It had nothing to do with the fact that he was powerful enough to lead a ship like the Valhalla into space.

She wasn’t interested in powerful or rich men. What she loved was looking into those black eyes and seeing genuine interest, not only in the sway of her hips or because he wanted to see her naked. Vincent enjoyed being around her.

And she enjoyed being with him more than she thought possible.

The fact that he looked good with his shirt off had nothing to do with it. Absolutely nothing. Ralph looked good with his shirt off, and she didn’t feel nearly as attracted to him. Now, she was making excuses because she enjoyed staring at Vincent’s abs as he moved around the ring.

He bounced on his feet like a dancer. His brain worked on a level that inspired her. He certainly didn’t give off big brother vibes like Ralph did. If anything, he was a little dangerous. Who knew she had a thing for the bad boys?

Maybe it was only this bad boy.

Nomi sat back in her seat and watched him strut. Shirt off. Muscles rippling as he moved. Vincent was a little sweaty. His body glistened. Part of her wondered what it would be like to run her hands down those abs as he kissed her. Nomi was shocked with herself. Lustful thoughts weren’t her thing. She was an eye-on-the-prize kind of girl, and there would be no chance for her to escape the slums if she ended up pregnant.
